Are You Ready for the Lord’s Return?
Dennis Abernathy
As Jesus began His teaching regarding His second coming, He stated: “Therefore watch (be on the alert) for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be broken into. For this reason, you must also be ready; for in such an hour as you think not the Son of Man cometh” (Matt. 24: 42-44).
Since no one on earth can know when Jesus is coming again, the Lord admonishes us to watch, be ready and on the alert. He will come as a “thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5: 2). In verse 4 He said, “But you, brethren are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief.” Therefore, there will be no advance warning about His return. At a time, or at an hour, when it is least expected, He will come again!
We are taught by God’s amazing saving grace to look “for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the Great God and our Savior Jesus Christ who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works” (Tit.2: 13-14). In the meantime, while looking for our Lord’s return we will be “denying or saying NO! to ungodliness and worldly lusts” and doing our best to “live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world” (Tit.2: 11-12).
“Watch and pray, for the Lord is coming,
Coming in the clouds someday.
Wash your robes in the cleansing fountain
Watch, oh, watch and pray.
He may come in the early morning,
He may come at the close of day,
Watch and pray, in His promise trusting
Watch, oh, watch and pray.
When He comes, He’ll reward the faithful,
What a glorious day ‘twill be.
Joy awaits those who have made ready
Watch, o, watch and pray.”
My good friend, I implore you to think on these things.
