The Prevalence of Adultery

Dennis Abernathy

Information from statistics reveal that approximately forty-one percent of the American public have been unfaithful to their marriage partners. I don’t think those statistics surprise many people today, and perhaps that is significant also. Things have gotten so bad; we just aren’t surprised any longer that four out of every ten married people eventually commit adultery. Sexual immorality is more commonplace and looked upon with less stigma in our culture today. Marriage is surely facing hard times. Why is this trend on the rise today? It appears that fewer people could care less about what the Word of God says about adultery or anything else for that matter. But for those of us who do care, the Scriptures have a very clear message.

Take Hebrews 13: 4 for example. It says: “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” God’s command that “marriage is to be held in honor by all” is being dishonored by more and more. High regard and honor for the sanctity of marriage keeps the sexual union pure. Fornication and adultery are not just sins against one’s body (1 Cor. 6: 18), they are also manifestations of a worldly and fleshly mind and heart (Matt. 15: 19) that really cares nothing for what God says and considers the Bible an outmoded book.

What have we learned? On the one hand, the Bible says that sexual relations within honorable marriage is good, On the contrary, the Bible plainly says that sex outside of marriage is sinful and wrong. That is why the Bible warns “God will judge.” People may say what the Bible says is old-fashioned and outdated, but it is still truth. Fornication and adultery are still wrong, and always will be. Think on these things.
